Secondary Headteacher Conference - Towards Total Engagement
On 26 February 2010, businesses from across Yorkshire and Humber joined secondary heads and college principals at a conference in Leeds which addressed how an impending law change will significantly impact young people in education, apprenticeships, young workers as well as employment opportunities.
Developed by Young People's Enterprise Forum (YPEF) and funded by Yorkshire Forward, ‘Towards Total Engagement' attracted almost 200 delegates who heard speakers from Yorkshire Forward, YPEF and the Government Office for Yorkshire and Humber address a range of issues around the central theme of an impending law change in school leaving age.
Delegates heard that many organisations - and even some young people and parents - are unaware and underprepared for the changes which, in 2013, will mean young people are required by law to stay in education or training until they are 17; and 18 from 2015. However, the audience heard that the real opportunity is to ensure the new choices now available to 14-19-year-olds should encourage, rather than demand, more remain and participate in education for longer.
Suzy Alderson, Executive Director of the YPEF, said the conference was a success with positive delegate feedback. She said: "The future economic prosperity of Yorkshire and Humber is dependent on ensuring we have a pipeline of enterprising young people with the confidence and higher level skills employers need if we are to compete in an increasingly competitive global economy.
"The speakers and the panel events really brought these points alive, particularly the important role employers will play in providing inspiring role models, as well as making learning relevant, in order to engage young people."
